Identify the component from the drawing, inspect it for damage, measure its specified mating features and verify that it can be assembled without unintended contact. A deflector that looks intact can still be loose on its shaft or incorrectly positioned. Equally, moisture near a bearing does not prove that the deflector is defective. Keep the component examination separate from the wider investigation into how contamination reached the housing.

This guide addresses a deflector during a controlled pump overhaul. It does not assume that every industrial pump uses the same arrangement, or that a photographed BORRAPUMP model contains a particular deflector. Obtain the actual parts drawing and acceptance requirements before deciding whether a component can return to service.

Understand which component you are inspecting

Names such as deflector, slinger, flinger, bearing isolator and oil ring are sometimes used loosely in maintenance discussions. They do not establish interchangeability. Determine whether the part rotates with the shaft, is located by a step, is secured by a screw, or belongs to a different arrangement. Identify its relationship to the housing, shaft and other adjacent parts using the equipment documentation.

Record the tag, model, serial number and part reference on the inspection sheet. Photograph the component in its original orientation before removal when safely possible. Include the surrounding parts in one photograph so that the location remains understandable after the machine is dismantled. Avoid placing punch marks on a working bore or contact surface. Use an approved identification method that preserves the features to be measured.

Control the job before approaching the bearing housing

Follow the site’s isolation, draining and maintenance procedures. Address electrical energy, stored pressure, temperature, process residues and any movement possible through connected equipment. Appropriate isolation is a job-specific requirement; stopping the motor is not a complete maintenance preparation. Consult the HSE equipment maintenance guidance for general principles and apply the pump’s own instructions for the actual intervention.

Protect open bearing and seal areas from dirt introduced during disassembly. Keep removed components on a clean, identified surface, and keep small locking parts with their location record. When a component resists removal, investigate its retention method before applying extra force. A concealed screw, corrosion or incorrect removal direction can turn a reusable part into a damaged one and make the original failure evidence harder to interpret.

IS Clean Water Centrifugal Pump Range, Green Original. Illustrative setting derived from the original BORRAPUMP product image; not an actual customer installation, internal damage view, bearing arrangement or approved repair procedure.

Preserve deposits and contact evidence before cleaning

Look at the as-found condition first. Photograph contamination tracks, corrosion, rubbing marks and deposits around the bore or housing interface. Record where they occur relative to a fixed orientation reference. A localized polished band can have a different significance from uniform surface staining, but its cause still needs to be established through the actual assembly geometry and service history.

Select a cleaning process compatible with the component material and any coating or elastomer present. Protect nearby machined surfaces and prevent cleaning debris from entering the bearing area. Do not remove a ridge, polish a bore or abrade an edge simply to make the part appear serviceable. If material removal is authorized, record it as a repair and repeat the relevant checks rather than reporting the resulting surface as the original condition.

Examine cracks, corrosion and mechanical damage

The OISD pump inspection guidance includes deflector examination for cracking, erosion and corrosion, checks of the bore and relevant step diameter, and inspection of locking screw threads where fitted. These categories provide a useful starting point. The exact design and pump documentation determine which features exist and what acceptance requirements apply.

Inspect the complete accessible circumference under suitable lighting. Describe the location and extent of an indication instead of writing only “worn.” Record whether a mark lies on a mating surface, a free edge or a retention feature. If an apparent crack is found, hold the component for the specified examination and disposition. Do not grind away the indication to see whether it disappears, and do not infer that a surface examination establishes the condition through the full section.

Inspect any screw, tapped hole or other retaining feature that the drawing identifies. Check for damaged engagement, corrosion and evidence that the part moved from its intended position. Examine the mating shaft surface too. A damaged shaft feature can prevent secure positioning even if the deflector itself is new. Keep the findings for both parts linked in the report.

Measure the specified interfaces without inventing a clearance

List the drawing dimensions and datums before selecting instruments. A bore measurement alone cannot establish whether a deflector will locate correctly: the mating shaft feature, step and axial position may also matter. Use instruments suited to the feature and the required accuracy. Record the units, measuring locations and instrument identification so another person can reproduce the result.

Where multiple readings are needed to assess form, record their actual positions rather than averaging away a local difference. The procedure should state how out-of-round, taper or runout is assessed when relevant. Do not apply a clearance copied from another pump or a component that merely has the same trade name. Whether the arrangement is contacting, non-contacting or otherwise constrained must come from the design.

Inspection item

Evidence to record

Decision supported

Component identity

Drawing reference, orientation and adjacent parts

Correct part and applicable procedure

Body condition

Location of cracks, corrosion or material loss

Further examination, replacement or approved repair

Bore and step

Actual dimensions with datums and units

Compatibility with the specified mating features

Retention

Screw or locking feature identity and condition

Ability to secure the part as designed

Shaft interface

Damage and corresponding measurements

Whether replacing the deflector alone is sufficient

Final location

Recorded axial position and clearance checks

Assembly without unintended interference

This table is a qualitative planning aid, not a universal acceptance standard. Add a separate column containing the equipment-specific requirement and its source before release. If the drawing is missing, report the measured condition and keep the acceptance decision open rather than inventing a tolerance.

CYZ-A Self-Priming Oil Transfer Pump. Illustrative setting derived from the original BORRAPUMP product image; not an actual customer installation, internal damage view, bearing arrangement or approved repair procedure.

Distinguish component damage from the contamination cause

A defective or displaced deflector may be one finding in a broader bearing problem. Review the service history, environmental exposure and any recent maintenance without assuming a single cause. Water may have more than one possible entry route. An intact component does not demonstrate that the housing is protected under every operating or cleaning condition, while a damaged component does not establish the complete failure sequence.

Use the separate bearing-housing water-ingress investigation to organize the contamination evidence. Compare its findings with the actual condition of housing joints, connected items and the as-found lubricant. Avoid changing several features at once without documenting them: the next inspection should be able to distinguish the original condition from the corrective work performed.

Reassemble and verify the intended position

Before fitting the accepted component, confirm its identity and the condition of the mating parts. Follow the approved assembly sequence, axial position, screw preparation and tightening method. Do not add a retaining compound or substitute a different screw because the original arrangement appears loose. Such changes need an authorized decision that considers the actual materials, geometry and service.

Complete the specified manual movement and clearance checks while the equipment remains safely isolated. Record any rubbing or unexpected resistance and resolve it before release. Where access is lost after assembly, capture the required measurements and photographs at the appropriate hold point. Restore guards and protective items through the commissioning procedure. A satisfactory bench inspection is one part of release, rather than proof of operating reliability.

Send the right information with a replacement inquiry

A product page such as the IS clean-water centrifugal pump range identifies a relevant industrial pump family. It does not establish that all builds use one deflector material, bore, retention method or geometry. Send the model, serial number, parts drawing and original component reference before requesting a replacement or advice on a repair.

Include photographs showing orientation and damage, measured interface dimensions and the shaft findings. Explain whether the pump has been modified and whether the original part is available for examination. Keep this record with the centrifugal pump maintenance inspection report. An oil ring inspection concerns a different component and should not be used as the deflector’s acceptance procedure, even when both are examined during the same overhaul.

Further learning: engineering fits

The IIT Kanpur NPTEL lecture below explains fits and tolerances. It provides background for interpreting mating dimensions, while the pump drawing supplies the actual requirements. The lecture does not prescribe a deflector clearance, retention design or assembly position.

Frequently asked questions

Is a deflector the same as an oil ring?

No. Identify each part from the equipment drawing.
